Preparing for Bariatric Surgery

It is important to know how to prep ahead for Bariatric Surgery. These are some basic recommendations from Dr. Del Pino:

  • You need approximately 1-2 weeks to recover to go back to work.

  • It is recommended to have support from a friend, partner, or family member during the first week of recovery.

  • Purchase and have your Bariatric Vitamins readily available, remember you must take vitamins for life after Bariatric Surgery.

  • Complete your Liver Reduction pre operative diet that includes protein shakes and any meal the dietitian recommends. The length of your diet (usually between 1-3 weeks) depends on the surgeon recommendation.

  • Make sure you have instructions from your Registered Dietitian on what to eat after the surgery. We recommend planning for the first 1-2 weeks.

  • Have plenty of sugar-free and non carbonated liquids available for before and after the surgery to maintain proper hydration

  • It is always recommended to join a Bariatric Support group. You may find some on social media. Patients that already underwent surgery can be very helpful responding questions.
